Going from 8XL to Size Large

Thinking about weightloss? Prepare yourself for one of the biggest expenses (don’t worry, it is an expense but it is totally worth it and motivational in itself). The largest size I ever wore was 8XL (70″ waist). As you can imagine, I had little choice from where to buy clothes and these were not cheap. When I liked something, most of the time I used to change my mind once I try it on as I didn’t like the fit due to the massive size.

Jeans Size : 70″ waist

During the first months of my Journey, I used to buy new clothes every 3 or 4 weeks due to the amount of weight I was losing. I admit, this wasn’t something I liked (even though as I said before, this was motivational) since I am that kind of person who buy clothes for each occasion and I hate to wear the office clothes for an evening outing. But this had to change and I ended up looking for clothes which I could wear both for work and outings. That’s not all! It was only one of the problems I was facing! Imagine when going on a holiday! The luggage weight allowed used to be reached after packing only 2 jeans and some t-shirts (as you can expect, the weight of 1 jeans was equivalent to 2-3 normal jeans) and once I land in a foreign country, I used to be worried that my luggage could get lost and I end up without clothes (you must be thinking that I could buy new ones if this happened but keep in my that finding my size was not an easy task).

Weddings? Ohh that was another headache! Most of the time I ended up ordering a custom made suit as I couldn’t find my size. If normal suits used to cost €200-€300 to the average person, I used to pay approx. €600 to have it done in my size! (lucky me, more bigger sizes clothes shops started showing up on the Island and I could get a suit for a cheaper price!)

Same suit, some 3 years later

Today (2 years 5 months from the date I started this journey) it was time to buy some more cloths for this summer since the ones I had are not fitting me anymore. As per usual, I went to the clothes shop to buy some gym clothes and whilst going around, I picked an XL shorts. Tried it on and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. That shorts that appeared to be the perfect size for me in my eyes was too big. I had to ask for a smaller size. Can you image how I felt? How happy I was?. How is that possible? I asked myself. Some 2 years ago I used to ask for 8XL and now I was asking for a Large? Yup! I wasn’t dreaming! That was the size! I must admit, I tried it on myself twice whilst in the dressing room as I still couldn’t believe my eyes!

Just a tip for those who are also in a middle of their weightloss journey or maybe those who are planning to start theirs, keep a pair of the biggest clothes you own. As you can see from the pictures in this blog, these are my biggest motivation. Sometimes I end up putting them on to remember from where I started. Believe me, there are no words than I can use to explain the feeling!

Roderick, I’m not sure how I came across your site, but your weight loss story is inspirational to me. I just had to order 70″ jeans for the first time last year and now they are getting too tight for me. Not sure what to do really because I can’t seem to find larger sizes easily now. Thank you for sharing your story. I hope I can follow in your footsteps soon. Dave
