Curb your Cravings

Eating Junk food was something I did everyday for years. Let’s face it, if you are not good at cooking food and there is no one preparing the food you like, buying a take away is like the ‘default’ option. You just order over the phone and have the food delivered to you in no time (and it’s cheaper than buying something healthy, that is the sad truth!). Pizza was my favorite and still is! 99% of my cheat meals consist of pizzas.

Besides Junk food, I also loved chocolate and other sweets/refined sugars such as ice-cream, soft drinks, cup cakes, biscuits, etc… Let’s get this straight. You cannot live a healthy life style unless you are willing on giving up on most of these items I mentioned. Giving up doesn’t mean that you ban such food from your life, but you need to keep control of your food intake. In this post, I won’t be giving out diet plans (as I always say, I am NOT a nutritionist and whatever was good for my diet, doesn’t mean will work on you), but I am going to discuss on how I dealt with cravings.

Sweets! Oh! Yup! Most probably this is the most common problems. Sugars do taste good but keep in mind that too much sugar will cause; weight gain, increase the risk of a heart disease, increase the risk of diabetes, and so on. It is not easy to cut on them (I know!) but with some sacrifice you can deal with this problem. There are those we refer to as Natural Sugars (example like the sugar in the fruit we eat) and Refined Sugars (sugars we find the sodas, sweet cakes, etc.. which takes much longer to be processed by our body). They are both sugars but let’s take an apple as an example, your body will experience less of a blood sugar spike after eating an apple than after eating a cup cake and it still taste sweet! My secret was that I opted for fruits whenever I craved something sweet. Okay it does not taste the same but it does taste sweet! Who cares?

Try to avoid storing such food at home because if you have easy access to them, there is a higher risk that you end up eating them. Example if you open your fridge and the first thing that you see is a bottle of soda, the chances are that you won’t even look for water. If you open your freezer and find ice-cream, you won’t even try to reach for fruit to make a smoothie and so on.

Once you settle in your new healthy lifestyle, it will become much more easier to control. So that’s all for now. Remember that even natural sugars are bad for you if you do not control and keep in mind that you do not have to be too hard with yourself. If you feel like eating a pizza, work for it and have it as your cheat meal (or as I prefer to call it, earned meal) because if you try to ban something you like, there is a higher risk that you end up eating it without control the first chance you will find so my advice is to take control on what you eat!

Eat clean, Live well 🙂
